Description:
Co-managed by OKAPI and the Department of Anthropology, Okapi Island is our piece of virtual real estate in the 3d environment of Second Life. We use Okapi Island to explore new forms of teaching, learning and public outreach. Today, virtual residents of Second Life can visit Okapi Island to explore 3d reconstructions of Çatalhöyük, a 9000 year-old Neolithic village located in present-day central Turkey. Çatalhöyük is the site of ongoing excavations and research by an international team of scholars, including the Berkeley Archaeologists at Çatalhöyük, led by UC Berkeley professor Ruth Tringham. A dozen undergraduate research apprentices constructed the island during the Spring 2007 and Fall 2007 semesters. The Island has hosted several public archaeology programs and, this Fall 08 semester, will support a student-run course offered through UC Berkeleys Democratic Education at Cal (DeCal) program. Okapi Island has received the 2007 Open Archaeology Prize and the 2008 NMC Virtual Learning Prize. |
