Description:
This project entails a critical historiography of the Yale-French Academy excavations at Dura-Europos. Using archival evidence held by the Yale University Art Gallery, it seeks to assess the extent to which the understanding of the ancient site was informed by the excavator’s understanding of the contemporary Middle East. One way in which an Other was constructed by the archaeologists was by means of archaeological photography. This project uses the photographs of Dura both as a means of accessing the unwritten history of local workers at Dura, and as a means by which the Other was constructed in the modern Middle East, which in turn was represented in modern archaeological writing as inhabiting ancient Dura. |
